The Narrow Road to Christ

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." (Matthew 7:13-14)

I remember the first time I read this Scripture. It seemed mysterious to me. A narrow gate, a narrow road. What was the Lord talking about? Could a narrow gate and narrow road explain the lack of Spiritual fruit we see in Christianity today?

I asked the Lord to help me understand the meaning of this Scripture. I meditated for months and months. Over time, the light began to appear. I saw the meaning. There is a gate and a path that leads to Christ. We must first enter through the gate. After we get through the gate, we must find the road and walk in love down that road.

Let's consider this process in terms of what we see in Christianity today. There are many people that have, for one reason or another, given their lives to Jesus. Jesus is their Savior. They have found the narrow gate. The gate is salvation.

Many Christians seem content with finding the gate. However, many of those who find the gate do not find the road that leads to life. This is precisely what the Lord told us. How do we know this? We know this because we see little Spiritual fruit in their hearts.

The narrow road leads to life - to Christ. Christ is Spiritual fruit. He is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Where there is Love, there is Light. Where there is Light, there is Life.

I've said before that the major problem with Christianity is that it has evolved into a religion that lacks the spirit of the very Being it is worshiping. In other words, Christ isn't part of the Christian religion. It's a religion that worships Jesus, but Christ isn't there. It's a tragedy. A real tragedy, but it is what it is and I trust that the Lord has a purpose for what we see today.

The Lord followed his discussion about the narrow gate and path with a warning and an observation. Here's what the Lord said:

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
(Matthew 7:15-23)

Turn on your T.V. and go to one of the Christian channels. What do you see? I don't know about you, but I see a lot of wolves in sheep's clothing. I see hearts with little or no Spiritual fruit. I see the same thing when I observe church activities. People are doing many things for the Lord, but He isn't present. It doesn't matter how many things you do for Jesus, how many correct teachings you receive, how many small group activities you participate in, how many missions you conduct. If Christ isn't there, they all count for nothing. They are wasted energy. They have not love. They are, as the Lord says, "ferocious wolves!" Watch out!

Many Christians will stand before the Lord in the future and will hear the saddest four words they will ever hear: "I never knew you." Many people will say, "But Lord, I did all these things in your name." And the Lord will say, "I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!"

Christianity is filled with evildoers. Seems strange, doesn't it? Many of these people come off as so righteous and moral, just as the Pharisees did when Jesus was ministering on earth. They worship Jesus, but they do not know Christ. There is something profoundly wrong with their hearts. They are not led by the Holy Spirit.

What the Lord has shown me is that Christ is not a "mass market" business, as Christianity has become today - that is, people "getting saved," tithing, and doing things for Jesus. On the contrary, what you see on the narrow path are very few people. It's lonely. I often tell the Lord that I feel so lonely when I'm around people that call themselves Christians.

There is Life on the path, but it's not the life that you see many Christians living today. Not even close. What keeps me on the road is the love that grows in my heart and the light I see up ahead. Christ is enough. He is all I need.

You can call yourself a Christian, you can go to church, you can prophesy in the name of the Lord on T.V. or on the radio, but if you don't have Christ in your heart - if you have little or no fruit - it doesn't matter what you say. The Fruit is the determining factor. It's shows us who has Christ inside and who does not. The Fruit does not lie.

When you find somebody who has seen Christ through revelation and walks in love, you will see much Fruit. You will see a pure heart filled with Love, Light, and Life.

May you find the narrow path and travel the road that leads to life.

The Essence of the Kingdom

I've noticed over the years that there is a great deal of confusion about the nature of the Kingdom of God. It is unfortunate that there is so much confusion, since the Kingdom is central to everything in the universe.

Today, I came across a little essay by T. Austin-Sparks that captures the essence of the Kingdom. Here's what TAS said:

"The Kingdom is not, in the first place, what is so commonly implied when people speak of 'extending the Kingdom,' meaning thereby the realm in which Christianity is propagated and converts are secured. The Kingdom in its inception at all times is the Lord Jesus present in power. "Ye shall be my witnesses" - that is the simple issue of the Kingdom. It is not a movement, it is not a teaching and it is not an institution. It is firstly Christ; then it is 'ye'. It is Christ present by the Holy Spirit in people - and manifestly present."

The Kingdom is Christ! How simple, eh? The simplicity of Christ once again! Religious hearts can't see the Kingdom, don't know what it is, and can't explain it because Christ is not inside. He does not reside in their hearts. He is exogenous, not endogenous.

When you see Christ through revelation and receive the Holy Spirit, you enter the Kingdom. Until this happens, the Kingdom is something outside. It exists in a spiritual realm that you cannot know or comprehend.

I hear pastors and other Christians say they are doing things for the Kingdom. I cringe every time I hear people say stuff like this. You can't do something for the Kingdom. It's not about doing things for Christ. It's about having the Lord do things through you for the purpose of His Kingdom. As Paul told the Galatians:

"For in Christ Jesus... the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." (Galatians 5:6)

When we try to do something for the Kingdom, it is a dead work. It's a dead thing that has no impact on the Kingdom. Sadly, there are lots of dead works occurring daily in Christianity today.

May you see Christ, receive the Kingdom, believe, and shine.

The Church Jesus is Building

I was having a discussing with some Spirit-filled hearts today via email and one of those hearts made an observation that I thought was pure wisdom. My friend said:

"His church is built on revelation."

Can you see the incredible light in that simple sentence? It's blinding!

The Church Jesus is building is being constructed through hearts that see Him. Most people tend to think of a church as a building that you go to once a week for an hour or two. People that see the Lord know that the true Church is Christ! He is the Church! And when we see Him through revelation, we become part of His Church - living stones in His Church!

The Lord revealed Himself to me as Love through 1 Corinthians 13. Moses saw the Lord in a burning bush. T. Austin-Sparks saw Christ in Romans Chapter 6. Chip Brogden, the founder of The School of Christ, saw Christ while reading Ephesians Chapter 1. He has revealed Himself to others as Truth, Faithfulness, Joy, Peace, The Alpha and the Omega, among many other things.

To see Christ through revelation is a miracle of God. It's a tremendous blessing. The more of the Lord you see, the deeper into the Kingdom you go. No human heart has ever explored the depths of His Kingdom, to my knowledge. I am not sure if that is even possible!

Jesus is building his Church on revelation - on us seeing more of Him.

He must increase, but we must decrease.
(John 3:30)

May you see Christ.

The Future of Christendom

A while back I wrote a blog on the future of Christianty. The main message was that Christanity as a religion had no future. It must eventually pass away.

This morning, I came across an essay by T. Austin-Sparks that sheds more light on this important topic. Here's an excerpt I found especially illuminating:

The Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken
Chapter 2 - Sonship, Outside the Camp of Traditional and Earthly Religion
T. Austin Sparks

Reading: Hebrews 12:26-29.

"That can just be Judaism repeated in Christendom. That is what Judaism was. Remember that Judaism came from God out of heaven at one time; it came by revelation, and it came in power, and it was accompanied, as this letter points out, with the voice of a trump, with fire and smoke, shaking and earthquake. It came with the accompaniments of God Himself, all terrible, a consuming fire: and yet it became that, a thing which had to be overthrown, for the overthrow of which God had to shake the earth. It became the thing which was the occasion of the chief conflicts of apostolic times. Paul's battles were on the field of Judaism. Yes, a thing which originally came from God, now one of God's main difficulties, doing more harm than it is worth, set aside, repudiated. You have only got to look at Jewry today and see how much respect God has for Judaism as such. Well, Christianity came from God, out of heaven, and this letter says that Judaism came through man but this faith came from the Son of God Himself. That is the comparison. He that spoke then on the earth, Moses; how much more in the case of Him that speaks from heaven. "God, who in time past spake unto the fathers in the prophets... hath at the end of the times spoken unto us in his Son..."; yet the peril and possibility and tendency is exactly the same in both cases, the end can be similar, and God will yet shake Christendom to its foundations, that it shall be shattered as He has done with Judaism. That is the testimony here. Yes, all our creeds, all our imitation of the New Testament. God never meant anything of His in this dispensation to be an imitation. He meant it to be the real thing. The difference between the real thing and the traditional is between life and death. Tradition is in one realm and life is in another. It depends entirely upon whether it is earthly or heavenly."

We can see the signs of Christianity's undoing today, and we can be sure that the Lord will continue shattering the Christian religion. Whatever is not of Christ must ultimately fall.

May you see an open heaven.

Things Above

Since my relevation of Christ back in December 2002, I've been placing less and less importance on earthly things. Things that used to be important to me no longer have any importance. A good case in point is the Grammy Awards. As a musician and recording artist, I used to dream of getting a Grammy. Last night, I paid no attention to the broadcast of the Grammy Awards. I have no idea who won what awards this year and I don't care. Receiving a Grammy is no longer important to me.

It's amazing how seeing Christ profoundly changes your perspective over time. Earthly things become less and less important and things above - Spiritual things - rise in importance. This is precisely what Paul told the Colassians:

"If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Col. 3:1-2)

To be honest, it's difficult to not seek those things which are above after seeing Christ. At least it is for me! I am not sure why Paul had to remind the Colossians about this, unless of course, many of them had not truly seen Christ (which is probably true). When you are blessed with the Holy Spirit through a revelation of Christ, everything on earth increasingly pales in comparison with those things which are above.

Today, I was reading about the life of T. Austin-Sparks. It is interesting to note that after TAS saw Christ, he immediately changed directions. Here's a little blurb about TAS from Wikopedia:

"T. Austin-Sparks was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony". In 1926, Austin-Sparks broke with this organisation and resigned his Baptist ordination. Together with like-minded Christians, he established a conference and training centre at Honor Oak in southeast London."

TAS went from a closed heaven to an open heaven in 1926. He saw Christ while reading Chapter 6 of Paul's letter to the Romans. That's what seeing Christ does - it transports hearts directly into an open heaven. How wonderful!

Seeing Christ is a tremendous blessing that brings with it a whirlwind of change in one's life. Titles, labels, rituals, awards ceremonies, etc., no longer have any importance in life. With each passing day, one only longs to see more of the Lord and less of everything else.

May you have your mind set on things above.

Christ vs. Christianity

Here's something I came across today that was spoken by T. Austin-Sparks back in November 1953:

"Multitudes of people today have no clear discernment, perception, or apprehension as to what is Christ and what is merely "Christianity." In evangelical Christianity things have become terribly mixed up, and what is necessary, it is evident, is the reconstituting of that which clearly and exactly defines what Christ is; that Christ shall be clearly understood and known, and all the confusing and complicating and mixing elements shall be eliminated."

Not much has changed in the past 55 years.

May you know the profound difference between Christ and Christianity.

Gifts from Above

For the past several years, Christine and I have been asking the Lord to bring us musicians who are connected with the Spirit to play with Sweetbird. As much as we love peforming together as a duo, the music we hear in our heads - the music inspired by the Spirit - often requires more than vocal and guitar.

Last year, we were blessed to meet Steve Cioppa, a gifted drummer/percussionist with a loving heart. Steve has been performing with Sweetbird over the past several months and his presence in the band has been wonderful. Steve has been a real blessing. As it turns out, Steve and Christine are related. They are related through Christine's niece, who happens to be the person to whom the Lord told us to dedicate "Shine."

Don't you just love the way the Lord works?

Speaking of the way the Lord works, last week He brought us another gift. This time, it was a bass player named Mike Kuchcinski, who lives near Hartford, CT, about 40 minutes from Sweetbird's home base. It turns out Mike has been performing with Steve Cioppa in another group, but he was looking for something more. Steve told Mike about Sweetbird a while back, but it wasn't until last week that the Spirit moved greatly in Mike's heart.

In a series of personal email exchanges, it was clear to me and Christine that the Lord was moving to bring Mike and his heart into Sweetbird. We haven't played yet with him (we will later this week), but Mike has been practicing day and night to learn Sweetbird's music so that he can begin performing with us. It turns out that Mike loves to play fretless bass, which is a real blessing because that fretless sound is integral to everything Sweetbird does.

Christine and I welcome Mike (and his wife, Magdalena), to Sweetbird, as we did Steve Cioppa and his beautiful family. It is a real blessing to have them with us as we continue to journey down the narrow path into the Light.

Seek first the kingdom...

In His kingdom, there are no coincidences. There is a purpose and a season for everything. The purpose of Sweetbird's music is to illuminate the Lord and His never-failing love. We thank the Lord for Steve and Mike, and we look forward to perfoming His music in the months ahead.

May you continue to love the Lord with all your heart.

Agape,

Steve

We've never had the honor to have a proper band, but we've always believed that the Lord would provide the right people for a band. Recently, we were contacted by a man who plays basshails from Poland
